To gain a better understanding of his personality, from the get-go, it'd be helpful to, first, know what kind of child he was. Rowdy, aggressive, quick-tempered, and incredibly protective of his younger twin brother, Yukio. Rin would get into several fights. He often came home with scrapes, cuts, and bruises. Even as a child, his foul temper had a tendency to get the better of him. One day, he even managed to black out and put a child in the hospital. Shiro was called to come and handle the situation. Ignoring the screams of his adoptive son, he approached him. The conversation went as so:
Shiro: Listen to me, Rin...If you don't change your ways, you're going to find yourself all alone...That power of yours, use it for someone else...use it to be gentle to them. I want you to be surrounded by a horde of friends someday...to become a cool guy that the girls are crazy for.
Rin: What are you talking about? How can I ever become someone like that?
Shiro: Struggle! If you keep on struggling to show other people kindness, then before you know it, you'll have become that person.
With that, Shiro fell over. As it turned out, during Rin's lashing out against his father, he'd managed to break some of his Shiro's ribs...
